What is TF-CBT?
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is an evidence-based treatment specifically designed to help teens and adults recover from trauma. It combines the proven strategies of cognitive behavioral therapy with trauma-sensitive interventions to address the unique impact of traumatic experiences.
TF-CBT helps you understand the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, and provides practical tools to manage trauma-related symptoms. It creates a safe space to gradually process painful memories while building resilience and coping skills.
Who is TF-CBT for?
TF-CBT can be helpful if you or your teen are experiencing:
Post-traumatic stress symptoms
Anxiety, depression, or behavioral difficulties following trauma
Difficulty managing emotions or intrusive memories
Impact from abuse, loss, accidents, or other traumatic events
Need for family involvement in the healing process
What to Expect in Sessions
TF-CBT follows a structured, gradual approach. Sessions typically include psychoeducation about trauma, relaxation and coping skills training, exploring and challenging unhelpful thoughts, and eventually processing the trauma narrative at a pace that feels safe for you.
For teens, family members may be involved in parts of the therapy to provide support and understanding. The approach is flexible and tailored to each person's unique needs and readiness.
